When Julia Joun’s not up to her elbows in rose petals, exotic herbs, jams, Ball jars and dehydrator trays, fulfilling her role as a “preserving maniac,” she’s digging through catalogs of films and sniffing out the Boulder/Denver culinary scene in order to program the Flatirons Food Film Festival, five nights of movies and workshops about the art, politics and science of food. “The pleasure of food is really important: how we convey our love for each other with food, the art of food and how sexy food can be,” Joun says. “I made sure to program a political film, and I am interested in agriculture and other aspects of the ways we encounter food. It touches our lives all the time.”

During the festival, audiences can feast on five feature films and a bushel of shorts paired with beer tastings, a performance by Opera on Tap, chef presentations, gastronomy demonstrations and tours of a farm, a brewery and a distillery.

The festival kicks off at 7 p.m. tonight with a celebration of the documentary Craft at a craft beer-pairing dinner at BRU handbuilt ales & eats, 5290 Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder. Tickets cost $50; to reserve a spot, call BRU at 720-638-5193. For more information about the festival, which runs through October 19, go to flatironsfoodfilmfest.org.
