A taste of work from the University of Colorado at Boulder’s arts/academic glitterati will be shared in Denver tonight when the literary press and tiny multi-arts venue Counterpath celebrates the release of internationally known author/artist Mark Amerika’s new book Locus Solus, while simultaneously launching the monthlong exhibit Albert Chong: The Photomosaics: Works on Paper, Wood and Stone.
Inspired by influential French surrealist author Raymond Roussel’s novel of 100 years ago, also called Locus Solus, which employed a series of tableaux vivants (or “living pictures”) in its plot, Amerika’s version remixes the text into something completely different, while Chong’s intricately collaged mosaic portraits are constructed of hundreds of tiny pictures to make political statements: For instance, a likeness of black activist Angela Davis contains miniature images of women with processed hair in her iconic afro.
The arts double-dip is free and begins at 7 p.m. at Counterpath, 513 22nd Street; the Counterpath imprint Locus Solus will be available for purchase for $28. The Photomosaics exhibit runs through November 1. Visit counterpathpress.org for information.
