For actor and comedian Katie Rubin, the key to a balanced life is finding the humor in spirituality. A veteran solo theater performer with a master’s degree in spiritual healing, Rubin began doing standup about six years ago, shocking and winning over audiences with her lighthearted approach to the metaphysical world. She’s also keen on talking about relationships, and in tonight’s Dick So Big: A Conscious Comedy Show, she covers such topics as personal growth, transformation, healing, dating — and penises.
“I like to think of it like this: I like to talk about really deep concepts and big ideas, but I like to balance it with a good dick joke here and there,” she says. “You can’t get deep all day or you lose people — but you can’t be all dick jokes, either.” The show, she adds, is a lot like her life, because she finds herself doing “very esoteric, weird, awesome healing stuff” and then turning it all around for a good-natured laugh. Her ultimate goal? Remind people not to take themselves too seriously.
Dick So Big goes down for one night only, at 8 p.m. at Aloft Broomfield, 8300 Arista Place in Broomfield. Tickets are $20 to $50 and can be purchased through at brownpapertickets.com. For more information on the comedian and her work, visit katierubin.com.
