There aren’t many love stories as beautiful and strange as Harold and Maude, and when the stage adaptation of the classic film opens tonight, you’ll find its unique wonder intact. Not that there aren’t some obstacles to staging the tale of a love affair between a septuagenarian with a zest for life and a twentysomething obsessed with death.

“It is tricky to do, because the suicides are all in it,” says director Pam Clifton. “But for me, when you take movies that are iconic, it’s really important to give the audience the feel of the movie. People get disappointed if you stray too much from that.”

And for those who are still worried that the play won’t live up to their all-time favorite movie, rest assured that Clifton is just as invested in the iconic film as its most diehard fans.

“When I was growing up, this had to be my favorite movie of all time. I think I’ve seen it more than anyone,” she says. “It’s really a joy to get to direct a play that was such a big part of your life.”

The show opens at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Vintage Theatre, 1468 Dayton Street in Aurora, and runs through November 8. Tickets are $26, or $21 in advance. For tickets and additional info, visit vintagetheatre.com.
