The R.O.U.S. (Rodents of Unusual Size) in The Princess Bride are little people in ridiculous rubber costumes. Andre the Giant really could drink a small pond’s worth of alcohol without falling down or even stumbling. And author William Goldman, who wrote the book on which the movie is based, nearly had a heart attack on the first day of filming, when the dress worn by Robin Wright (aka Buttercup) burst into flames in the Fire Swamp.
Those secrets and many more are among the tidbits you’ll uncover in As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales From the Making of The Princess Bride, a book by actor Cary Elwes that captures the madness and memories involved in filming what has become an indisputable classic.
“I wanted the book to be a love letter to the film and to everyone I worked with, so that was really what I set out to do,” says Elwes, who played Westley in the movie. And although his name is on the cover, it’s a collaborative effort that includes details from assorted cast and crew members to create a rich and beautifully textured look into the making of a very magical movie.
Elwes will sign As You Wish tonight at the Tattered Cover, 2526 East Colfax Avenue, at 7 p.m.; tickets are free with the purchase of a copy. (True fans will want to splurge for this first-edition hardcover anyway, because it includes an absolutely gorgeous Shepard Fairey print of Westley and Buttercup on the inside of the dust jacket.)
