Independent Journalism in Denver Needs You
We need to raise $25,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
Now there’s one more perk to voting Democrat: a discount on your paint job. Patrick Nesvadba, a.k.a. “Patrick the Painter,” taped this sign to a LoDo lamppost recently, advertising 10 percent off to left-leaning folks.
“I think it sounds like a good idea to put your money where your mouth is, to put your beliefs on your sleeve,” he says.
Disgusted by the Enron scandal and the war in Iraq, Nesvadba changed his party affiliation six years ago and hasn’t looked back since. He even switched out his car for a bike and trailer as a protest against the war.
Nesvadba hasn’t given out any discounts on house paintings yet, and he says he won’t be verifying party affiliation — he’ll just take his clients’ word for it. Though he doesn’t talk politics with his customers, he may become even shrewder about his patrons.
“I might change that to not taking any Republicans at all. I have plenty of work so I can be choosy.”
