Potholes: No street in Colorado is immune from them — and around this time each year, their numbers seem to grow at the same pace as the frustration of drivers and property owners.

So credit Colorado Springs’s Bryan Ford with doing something about them.

After the city allegedly failed to respond to complaints about a pothole outside his business, Ford reportedly decided to make his point about the situation in a very nature-friendly way — by planting a tree in it.

The story definitely struck a chord among Colorado Springs media, and no wonder. Indeed, one television station in the area, KKTV, actually boasts a “Policing Potholes” page, featuring a graphic that shows the worst potholes in the area according to viewers.

Will you step up to support Westword this year?

At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $20,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.

No surprise, then, that on May 31, the station’s Facebook page shared the photo at the top of this post.

At this writing, the item has collected nearly 2,000 likes and been shared more than 600 times.

In the meantime, Ford, owner of B&M Auto Repair, who says he planted the tree after his forklift got stuck in the pothole and actually had to be pulled out of it, has become something of a folk hero in the Springs.
