Science-fiction films don’t have to have astronomical budgets or use absurdly elaborate special effects to be engaging; in fact, the science-fiction canon features nearly as many small-scale, low-budget classics as it does Hollywood blockbusters. In preparation for the debut of director Alex Cox’s latest film, itself a low-budget sci-fi epic, the University of Colorado’s International Film Series is presenting three such movies during the Low-Fi Sci Fi series.

“It’s a trilogy of films we got in anticipation of [showing] Alex Cox’s Bill the Galactic Hero on December 12,” says IFS executive director Pablo Kjolseth. “Alex was instrumental in choosing the films that he felt were in the same pantheon as his film.”

The series begins tonight with John Carpenter’s debut, Dark Star, and continues with Death Race 2000 tomorrow and Tetsuo: The Iron Man on Sunday. Each movie will be introduced by Cox, who will discuss his choices and how they relate to his new work.

All three screenings start at 7:30 p.m. at Muenzinger Auditorium on the CU-Boulder campus. Tickets for all shows are $5; for more information, visit internationalfilmseries.com.

Nov. 14-16, 7:30 p.m., 2014
