The entire world should have a spring in its step today as more than 500 cities across the globe celebrate the healing, community-building, vibration-raising power of music. In Denver, Make Music Day builds on France’s Fête de la Musique, which has inspired happy imitators since it became a national holiday in that country in 1982. All day long, the city’s streets, parks and sidewalks will be filled by buskers, songwriters, quartets, soloists and anyone else who wants to join in the fun.
“Make Music Denver is an event for everyone,” says Tami Door, president and CEO of the Downtown Denver Partnership, the free event’s sponsor. “It’s for musicians wanting to be a part of a celebration that recognizes creativity and art around the world, and for community to appreciate the spontaneous energy and vibrant sounds of music in Downtown Denver. It’s a chance to appreciate the impact it has on our lives.”
Organizers hope even non-musical Denverites will embrace the spirit of Make Music Day in its inaugural year. With so much music in the air, you never know just who might break out in song.
