Today is Local News Day
A national day of action to support and celebrate the trusted local journalism that strengthens communities. If you believe local news matters — this is the day to show your support. Make a contribution today to help keep our reporting free and accessible to all.
About 8,000 people will get physical in Cheesman Park today to show their support for the Colorado AIDS Project, its sister organizations and people living with HIV/AIDS at the 21st annual AIDS Walk Colorado. Last year, the event — which also includes the 5K AIDS Run — raised more than $600,000 to support area AIDS services and educational organizations. Get to Cheesman Park around 8:30 a.m. to register for the race (walkers bring their pledges; runners pay $35). Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m., and at 10:30, the starting shot is fired, with runners in the lead. The course stays in and around the park; expect closures on Humboldt and Marion streets and Seventh Avenue between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. At the finish line, the AIDS Walk Beer Garden will add a healthy dose of levity to an otherwise sobering occasion.
