John Oliver is not a journalist, but he plays one on TV. Actually, he plays a journalist in real-life situations that are broadcast on TV — which can lead to some pretty bizarre situations. “The first one I did was the Israeli ambassador,” Oliver recalled in an interview now on YouTube. “We’re sitting down, there was Mossad security behind him. And I knew the first question on my sheet was, ‘Obviously, as a European, I’m an anti-Semite.
“‘Convince me you’re not trying to rule the world.’”
That was for a bit on The Daily Show, probably Oliver’s best-known gig — but he’s also a noted standup comedian with two specials under his belt (plus a slew of side projects), who brings the same sly, dry Brit-wit to the stage as he does to unsuspecting diplomats. A common theme of all his pieces? Americans are idiots.
Oliver brings his act to the Comedy Works in Larimer Square, 1226 15th Street, tonight at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.; it repeats at the same times Monday and Tuesday at the Comedy Works in Landmark Village, 5345 Landmark Place in Greenwood Village.
