Moleskins, alternative newspapers, Ray-Bans, beards: all stuff white people are into, or so says author Christian Lander, whose website spawned his first book, Stuff White People Like. Now he’s back to the printed page with Whiter Shades of Pale. The book’s primary goal is to look even closer at white culture, this time parsing it across continents and regions.
The point, of course, is that even under the banner of stuff white people like, the generalities can be more specific. “For instance, in Boulder,” Lander says, “you’ll find the aging baby boomer with a secret shame of not enjoying a Native American chant.” On tour, Lander usually reads a bit from his book, but he also goes into detail about how, exactly, he became Internet-famous through his blog and how it ended up scoring him two book contracts. Regardless of where you’re from, his commentary operates on the thin line between snarky stereotypes and truthful social commentary.
