What’s the most definitive Disney film musical? Many would say Beauty and the Beast, which is why it’s no surprise that the prettified fairy-tale-with-music turned into what’s probably the most successful attempt to adapt Disney to the Broadway stage. It’s a downright classic — from its near-perfect Menken and Ashman score to the lavish costumes and characters — that’s captured the hearts of children and adults alike with its dancing dishes and candlesticks and romantic intrigue. That’s also what makes the show a natural on tour, the kind of crowd favorite that returns again and again to resounding kudos, reminding audiences that dreams do come true, and big, ugly guys can have hearts of gold. And, girls, that Belle actually has a little spunk.

We all need a little fairy tale in our lives now and then, so here’s your chance: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Buell Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; shows continue daily through Sunday, March 18. Tickets start at $20; get yours at www.denvercenter.org or by calling 303-893-4100.

Wednesdays-Fridays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m., 3 & 8 p.m.; Sun., March 18, 2 & 7:30 p.m. Starts: March 14. Continues through March 18, 2012
