Pulque, cerveza, mescal and tequila are just some of the stars of El Brindis Remixed, an exhibition opening tonight at the Museo de las Americas. But it is the relationship of these alcoholic beverages to the humans holding them that takes center stage in dozens of images from the last century, taken by such photographers as Agustín Víctor Casasola, Mariana Yampolsky and Graciela Iturbide, all part of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s inner circle.
The Museo has been transformed into a bright and colorful pulquería — a type of tavern in Mexico that serves up pulque — to showcase the photos. “The exhibit is kind of about catching people in their natural element, and they happen to be drinking,” says the museum’s Victoria Gonzalez. And “remix” is part of the title because the work was originally shown at the Museo over a decade ago — the first time the photographs were seen in the U.S.
The show’s free opening reception, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Museo, 861 Santa Fe Drive, will feature tequila and craft-beer tastings, along with samplings of traditional Mexican cuisine. The museum has also partnered with Uber to make sure patrons get home safe, offering discounted rides to first-time users.
