As a women’s studies professor, Elissa Auther was frustrated by narrow, stuffy discussions that never engaged anyone outside of academia. So last year she founded Feminism & Co., a Lab at Belmar series that brings a campy, irreverent style and creative performances to critical debates on women’s issues.

The series’ second season kicks off tonight with Bitch! The History and Politics of a Word. Melinda Barlow – a film studies professor, self-proclaimed “bitch extraordinaire” and fantastically unorthodox and engaging speaker, according to Auther — will get the conversation started with clips showcasing Hollywood’s most irreverent and impudent female characters from the 1970s through today.

There’s a bitchin’ reception with cash bar at 6 p.m. at the Lab, 404 South Upham Street in Lakewood; the official program starts at 6:30 and will no doubt continue – unofficially – late into the evening at the Oven, across the street. Tickets to Bitch! are $10, $5 for Lab members. The Feminism & Co. series continues on Thursdays through April 23, when the Lab will move to the Museum of Contemporary Art. Go to www.belmarlab.org or call 303-934-1777 for tickets and info.

Will you step up to support Westword this year?

At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $21,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
