There was a time when quilts were merely humble patchwork blankets, with the sole purpose of keeping pioneers from freezing their muskets off. Eventually, the utilitarian coverlets evolved into intricate works of art.
Today through Sunday, decorative quilts, clothing and other forms of textile craft are on display at the inaugural Denver National Quilt Festival at the Denver Merchandise Mart.
“Almost everyone will find something interesting at the show, even if they think they don’t like quilts,” says award-winning quilter Ann Fahl, whose works are included in a special exhibit. “There are quilts that look like paintings, quilts about hobbies, sports, autos, people, experiences and landscapes. And some actually look like something you might remember from Grandma’s house.”
The event will feature workshops and lectures led by instructors from around the country, as well as a Merchants Mall offering fabrics, notions and more. In addition, fiber artists will vie for $12,000 in prizes in a juried competition.

The show runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Merchandise Mart, 451 East 58th Avenue. Pay a one-time general-admission price of $12 for all four days, or $10 for Sunday only (sixteen and under admitted free). Lecture and workshop fees range from $18 to $65.
