It took sixteen years for John Cougar Mellencamp, Stephen King and T Bone Burnett to launch Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, which lead actress Gina Gershon describes as “a Southern, rock, gothic, supernatural ghost story.” The musical follows Joe McCandless, whose older brothers, fighting over a woman, killed themselves and her. Now, as an adult, Joe watches his own sons battle for love and has to decide whether or not to tell them the truth about their uncles.
“It’s a real dysfunctional family drama about how abuse is passed on from one family to the next,” Gershon says. “There is a feeling that if you don’t tell the truth, if you don’t face your demons, if you don’t really move on, you pass that abuse down to your family.”
The play feels like an old-time radio show driven by groovy roots music, Gershon adds. “I love the music. John’s band is fantastic. His four-piece band is up there; they’re really incredible. For me, it’s really great just listening to this music every night. And I get to sing a couple of the songs — that’s an extra bonus.”
Ghost Brothers plays tonight only at 7:30 p.m. at the Buell Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Tickets range from $50.25 to $92.35 and can be purchased at artscomplex.com or 720-865-4220.
