Despite recent efforts to curb usage of disposable bags, “Paper or plastic?” continues to be a question that echoes across grocery-store checkout lanes. Rik Sargent, curator of the new Paper or Plastic? exhibition at gallery910Arts, hopes to turn the query into a call for change by making shoppers aware of the environmental impact of their daily decisions.
Sargent, a bronze sculptor, brought together twelve local, nationally recognized artists working in a variety of mediums to locate the sources for the materials used in their work. These locations are represented on a world map alongside each piece in the exhibition, illustrating the hidden resources used every day by artists and others.
Sargent hopes the show will heighten awareness about how simple decisions affect the environment and create “ripples of consequence.” He’s hoping to examine the environmental impact of this exhibition in a follow-up show next year with the same artists.
Paper or Plastic? is currently on display at gallery910Arts, 910 Santa Fe Drive. For more information, visit www.gallery910arts.com or call 303-815-1779.
