Few Halloween club-night promoters meld partying with the arts more seamlessly than the Fantastic Hosts, a private local group for young professionals that opens some of its events to the public. Tonight’s Fantastic Ugly Bug Ball is the group’s spooktastic love letter to the fun-loving, diverse and artsy crowds of Denver, and everyone is invited to participate — with a capital “P” — in the costume party, which celebrates Halloween and Day of the Dead with one big bug-themed extravaganza.
“We try to create immersive environments,” says Fantastic Hosts spokesman Lawrence Phipps. “For one art installation, we’ve created a metal sculpture of two giant ants holding a flaming heart that’s 32 feet long and 15 feet high. We’ll also have a huge steampunk dragonfly with 3-D video-projection wing mapping. We try not to take ourselves too seriously — this is all for good fun — and we also make everything as crazy and stimulating as we can.” Phipps promises that the party will feature one of the best and most creative costume crowds in town; he encourages party-goers to be prepared to wow the crowds with their holiday garb.
Are you up to the task? Make a beeline: The Ugly Bug Ball begins at 9 p.m. at Exdo Event Center, 1399 35th Street; get tickets, which range from $25 to $30, online at eventbrite.com. For more information, visit the Facebook event page.
