Colin Roybal, director and choreographer of Equinox Theatre Company’s production of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown: The Musical, knew he’d have to tweak the show in order to adjust to the digs at the Bug Theatre — a task that required some innovation. “When the show originally premiered on Broadway, it had a huge cast and an enormous, complex set,” Roybal explains. “We definitely had to scale back the number of people in the ensemble because of the size of the Bug, and working in that space is always a challenge for sets. The show itself has some really complex scenes, like moving vehicles on a stage during a car chase, and we’ve man-aged to creatively solve those problems with some humor and some shtick.”
This is also the regional premiere of the musical, which made it a perfect fit for Equinox. “We’re always looking to bring new and exciting works of theater to the stage, and this production caught our attention first off because it has some really complex and beautiful music,” Roybal says. “It’s a really fun show. It’s got some real quirks to it; it’s crazy, fun, farcical and amazing.”
