Would you run into a burning building to rescue someone you don’t know? Would you climb high into a tree to save a cat that’s going to scratch the hell out of you and isn’t even yours? Probably not. But firefighters do all of that and much more, routinely.

According to a recent Harris Poll, about 63 percent of U.S. adults surveyed said firefighters have the most prestigious job in America. We all recognize that firefighters have one of the most demanding, selfless careers out there.

Come out today at 5 p.m. and tomorrow at 11 a.m. and watch firefighter teams from all over the U.S. and Canada battle each other, in full bunker gear, in a series of five events, including climbing a five-story tower; hoisting, chopping and dragging hoses; and rescuing a life-sized, 175-pound mannequin in the HealthOne Firefighter Combat Challenge.

The fire starts at the Westminster Promenade, at the intersection of U.S. 36 and 104th Avenue, and takes place in conjunction with the Taste of Westminster Promenade, so expect plenty of live music and food. Admission is free. Visit www.firefighterchallenge.com for more information.

Sat., July 28, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
