Colorado has a rich history, influenced by many cultures, and the Tesoro Cultural Center aims to preserve and celebrate those influences with community-based events, music and re-enactments. Tonight at the Fort Restaurant in Morrison, the organization will host its annualLas Posadas procession — a Spanish- and Mexican-themed Christmas tradition honoring Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

Las Posadas, which means “the inns,” is co-hosted by local nuns, who organize and stage a reenactment of the travels with children as actors — plus donkeys, sheep and a hay-filled manger. Everyone is invited to be a part of the Christmastime candlelit walk, which ends with a celebratory piñata and live traditional music from Lorenzo Trujillo.

“It’s very participatory, with a call-and-response from the nuns along the procession,” says the Tesoro Cultural Center’s Carolyn Doran. Warm clothing is recommended for the early-evening gathering, but hot beverages and New Mexican biscochitos (cookies) will be served. The Las Posadas procession and party runs from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Fort, 19192 Highway 8 in Morrison. The event is free and open to all ages. For more information, visit tesoroculturalcenter.org.

Tue., Dec. 24, 4-5:30 p.m., 2013
