For the ninth annual Design After Dark fundraiser, the Denver Art Museum wanted to manipulate this year’s “Cirque” theme a bit. “The idea is to play off the theme with three words — illusion, contortion and tension,” explains Darrin Alfred, associate curator for the department of architecture. The thirty participating artists, architects and designers were given just words to work with — the rest was up to them.
Works of wood, paper, steel and various other materials created specifically for the auction by Brittany Gould, Hangar 41, Matter, Open Studio Architecture and dozens more will be on display. The space itself will echo the extravaganza theme, with elaborate floral arrangements, circus-like hors d’oeuvre and a funhouse-mirror photo booth manned by Samuel Schimek — who will later turn the images he snaps into a time-lapse video.
The fun begins at 7 p.m. at the McNichols Building, 144 West Colfax; tickets are $40 to $85 and available online (advance purchase recommended) or at the door. For more information, visit www.designafterdark.denverartmuseum.org.
