The entire River North arts district will be hosting First Friday special events and open houses during tonight’s Evening in RiNo event. But the jewel in that crown will surely be the opening reception for Retroville — a pure-fun group kitsch show — taking place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Isadore Gallery, 3542 Walnut Street. Look for the giant foam tikis in the window, and you’ll know you’ve arrived.
“I’ve always been a fan of tiki and rockabilly culture, but it doesn’t usually do well in a gallery context,” says gallery owner Michelle Marie. But she went for it anyway, and hung a group show on the theme. “It’s turning out to be a lot bigger than I anticipated,” she adds, ensuring that Retroville will be a free-for-all of rockabilly portraits, Pacific Islander talismans of every variety, stained-glass pinups, street rods and more.
The reception will go on in the same riotous spirit with umbrella drinks, pupu platters, retro spins, pinstripe artist Rev and the Secret Servix Scooter Club; the show continues through June 23. Call 303-293-1950 or go to www.isadoregallery.com.
