You’ll see them at every gathering of geeks: elaborately costumed people repping their favorite characters from film, television, comics and more. They’re cosplayers, fans who dress up and role-play as their favorite pop-cultural personage, from the iconic to the obscure. Now the subculture is getting recognition for the art behind it at Cosplay in Colorado, a gallery show of fine-art cosplay photography.
“I’ve been around the scene for a long time, and I realized that cosplayers have all these photos, beautiful photos, and no one gets to see the works of art that they really are,” says Lauren Scanlan, the show’s curator. “And it’s meant to be educational. [Cosplay] is mostly just geeks playing around and having fun. It’s not anything weird or to be scared of.”
More than a dozen portraits of Colorado cosplayers will be on display, with accompanying interviews with the models and photographers to offer insight into the culture. Plus, all f the photos were taken in Colorado and chosen in part for the way they showcase our beautiful state. “I wanted to have a show to show off Colorado…and show what cosplay really is,” Scanlan says.
