Mother-daughter relationships are not new territory for writer Amy Tan, who first explored the subject in her debut novel, The Joy Luck Club. But in her latest book, The Valley of Amazement, she finds fresh ways to explore this ever-changing landscape. Chronicling the lives of a Chinese-American mother and daughter in two very different settings — 1897 San Francisco and 1912 Shanghai, just before the collapse of the Ching Dynasty — the book explores the cultural conflict between East and West and offers the kind of intelligent, bittersweet analysis of relationships that has made Tan a literary powerhouse since Joy Luck was published in 1987.
Tan will read from The Valley of Amazement tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street. The event is free, but space is limited; numbered tickets for the book signing will be available starting at 6:30 p.m. For more information, visit tatteredcover.com.
