Here in Denver, zombies are a big deal — a world-record-setting big deal. Now in its eighth year, the Denver Zombie Crawl has continually grown, challenging the other zombie-infested cities of the world for supremacy along the way. “The first year, we probably had forty people. We probably had 22,000 people last year,” says Daniel Newman, the crawl’s organizer.
Those numbers have been good enough to capture the record once or twice already, but like modern zombies, the target moves pretty quickly. “We’ll get [the record], and about six months later, Seattle or Philadelphia will take it away and we have to go back out and do it again,” Newman says.
The crawl is also a canned-food drive, so if you need more motivation, do it for the still-living who hunger for something more than brains. There’s more than just the walk, too: A pair of zombie-themed musical performances start the day, and afterward, two separate after-parties will let the dead dance until late into the night.
The pre-crawl entertainment starts at 2 p.m. (come down at noon if you need makeup help) in Skyline Park. The undead horde heads down the mall at 4 p.m. To register (not required, but it helps the world-record attempt) and for more info, visit eyeheartbrains.com.
