When’s the last time you went to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science just to contemplate the dioramas or wander among the fossils and bones of Prehistoric Journey? Once you’ve been through one of the big super-shows — such as the current one, A Day in Pompeii — it almost seems like too much. But that’s exactly what the museum’s SCFD Community Free Days are for: a chance to reconnect with the meat (and, when it comes to those bones, the meatless) of the DMNS.
You’ll still have to pay for Pompeii if you want to see it, along with the IMAX theater and Gates Planetarium shows. But you’ll have the run of everything else, gratis, today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the popular dino bones and the almost-anachronistic posed scenes from nature, you and the kids can explore Expedition Health, Space Odyssey, rocks and gems, the museum’s mummies and more, as well as partake in special free-day activities, including tours, face painting, crafts, scavenger hunts and performances by “paleopuppeteer” Mr. Bones and his dinosaur puppets. You can even get your tongue painted blue at Expedition Health’s Genetics of Taste attraction. Squeal!
There’s only one more free day after this in 2012 — on December 9; the series picks up again next year on January 28 at the museum, 2001 Colorado Boulevard. For information and a complete schedule of the DMNS’s eleven free days in 2013, go to www.dmns.org/about-us/scfd-free-days.
