Denver’s healthy salsa-dancing community comes out to dance every Wednesday night at Salsa Central’s weekly event at the Denver Turnverein, and everyone’s always welcome. But once a year, just for fun — and also in hopes of drawing in newcomers — they move it all outdoors, to Cheesman Park. For those who have considered taking up the sizzling-hot Latin dance but maybe didn’t have the courage, Salsa Central is here to show you that it isn’t all that wild or difficult, says spokeswoman and salsa nut Johnine Pietroski.
Today’s Summer Salsa and Bachata Bash kicks off with a zumba class at 2 p.m. and a salsa primer at 3; at 4, everyone will sashay across the Cheesman Park Pavilion’s pristine marble floor for open dancing and expert performances, with help from a DJ and live band Son Tres. “It’s beautiful outside, with the summer breezes and the sunshine,” Pietroski says. “You can hang out with a friend or bring your own picnic or chairs.” It’s all free, and a taco vendor will be on hand if you come without a picnic basket.
Come try out your steps at the park, located at Eighth Avenue and Franklin Street; visit salsacentraldenver.com for details.
