Sometimes races aren’t hard enough on their own; you have to add obstacles like tunnels, mud pits, water crossings, sand-bag carries or a slippery mountain to really get your heart rate’s worth. If you’re the part of the population that actually agrees with that, then the Merrell Down & Dirty Mud and Obstacle Series is what you should be doing this weekend. Racers can elect either a 5K or a 10K course, which will wind around the massive Aurora Sports Park, 19300 East Colfax Avenue, and Sand Creek Greenway Trail (including up the creek bed); there will be showers available for rinsing off and an expo and burger bash to browse before races start at 8, 8:45 and 9:30 a.m., followed by a kids’ adventure race at 10:45 a.m.

Registration is $60 to $70. Awards will be given to the top finishers in each age group, and the top athletes who complete the course barefoot (or wearing Five Fingers or Barefoot shoes) can win a new pair of shoes. Visit www.downanddirtymudrun.com.
