Keep Westword Free
We’re aiming to raise $20,000 by April 26. Your support ensures Westword can continue watching out for you and our community. No paywall. Always accessible. Daily online and weekly in print.
Sometimes races aren’t hard enough on their own; you have to add obstacles like tunnels, mud pits, water crossings, sand-bag carries or a slippery mountain to really get your heart rate’s worth. If you’re the part of the population that actually agrees with that, then the Merrell Down & Dirty Mud and Obstacle Series is what you should be doing this weekend.
Racers can elect either a 5K or a 10K course, which will wind around the massive Aurora Sports Park, 19300 East Colfax Avenue, and Sand Creek Greenway Trail (including up the creek bed); there will be showers available for rinsing off and an expo and burger bash to browse before races start at 8, 8:45 and 9:30 a.m., followed by a kids’ adventure race at 10:45 a.m.
Registration is $60 to $70. Awards will be given to the top finishers in each age group, and the top athletes who complete the course barefoot (or wearing Five Fingers or Barefoot shoes) can win a new pair of shoes. Visit www.downanddirtymudrun.com.
