You don’t have to be a rabid feminist to acknowledge the simple truth that the expectations placed upon women in almost any society are difficult to meet. “I know a lot of female artists,” notes Kim Harrell, owner of East End Applied Arts, 1556 Florence Street in Aurora. “And I started to see this common thread through their work where they were addressing issues specifically related to women, the kind of experiences that resonate with the rest of us.”

Thus was born Domesticated: art by women, about women, a new exhibit that opened May 18 and continues through June 30 at East End. “It provokes some thought beyond ‘Oh, that’s pretty’ or ‘Oh, that’s interesting,'” notes Harrell. “It considers what being domesticated is. We’re all wild creatures kind of trying to keep it together.”
