When you’re a veteran of the Front Range scene, there’s plenty of “been there, done that” to contend with while continuing to pursue your art. But Matt O’Neill, who just wrapped up a big painting show at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, has learned how to keep things fresh: He doodles. “When you get so old, even people who are 35 are like upstarts,” jokes O’Neill. “You have to plan out a painting, which is kind of technical, and I got tired of it, but I like doing stream-of-consciousness doodles, the kind you draw when you’re on the telephone.”
The result is “a little high and low culture,” he adds. “Of course, no one knows the difference anymore.”
O’Neill will be mixing it up when a series of his decidedly low-tech drawings (they’re rendered in ballpoint ink on lined notebook paper), as well as some exquisite-corpse collaborations created alongside younger “upstarts” such as Donald Fodness, Kevin Hennessy and Mario Zoots, remain on view at City, O’ City, 206 East 13th Avenue, through August; for more information, go to cityocitydenver.com or call 303-831-6443.
