The Neustadt JAAMM Fest, which started seven years ago at the Mizel Arts & Culture Center as a literature festival, has grown into a three-week bash celebrating Jewish authors, musicians, filmmakers and more. The audience has grown, too. “Our attendance picks up each year,” says the festival’s Stuart Raynor.
Every year, groups of volunteers with specific interests in each creative discipline vet the books, films, bands and theatrical performances that will eventually become part of the festival. It’s still deeply rooted in literature, though, and this year’s lineup includes appearances by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon as well as local writers Adam Rovner and Nancy Sharp. Internationally renowned clarinetist and Yiddish music authority Zalmen Mlotek will perform, as will Grammy Award-winning band Asleep at the Wheel.
The Neustadt JAAMM Fest kicks off today at 5:30 p.m. with an opening reception for Chosen: Jewish Artists From the Collection of Dr. Wayne F. Yakes, in the Singer Gallery at the Mizel Arts & Culture Center, 350 South Dahlia Street, where the fest runs through November 9.
