Some of my favorite Chinese New Year memories revolve around China’s many fantastic culinary contributions to the world: Buddha’s Delight, moon cakes, dumplings and any number of other treats. But while Chinese food may be the most easily accessible link to this holiday, the country’s traditional dance, song and other music offerings are just as tasty.
Tonight at 8 p.m. and again tomorrow at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., you can sample a world-class display of Chinese culture at the Chinese New Year Spectacular, at the Temple Buell Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. A forty-piece orchestra will accompany over sixty dancers, singers and solo musicians performing classical, ethnic, folk and story-based dance pieces. “This is a wonderful show that people of all ages really enjoy,” enthuses Andy Ellsmore of the Colorado Chinese Media Association. “There’s a large component of Chinese classical dance, a lot of acrobatic and aerial-type maneuvers, really extraordinary costumes and an LCD-screen backdrop that’s interactive with the performers.”
