A gritty dreamscape dominated by rival rock bands. A sizzlingly sexy Diane Lane. A sizzlingly androgynous Willem Defoe. What’s not to love about Walter Hill’s 1984 cult classic Streets of Fire? The director brought his neon-lit yet grimly cartoonish take on urban fantasy — one that he established in The Warriors — to this soundtrack-heavy phantasmagoria. And the Denver Film Society will plaster it across the big screen in full, archival, 35-millimeter glory as part of its Watching Hour series.
If you need another reason to check it out, though, remember: This is also the movie that helped make a hit of Dan Hartman’s ultra-cheesy ’80s anthem “I Can Dream About You.” For that, we owe it our gratitude. Streets of Fire will screen tonight and Saturday at 10 p.m. at Starz FilmCenter, in the Tivoli building on the Auraria campus.
