Cult director Trent Harris, whose bizarre and challenging films have thrilled cutting-edge cineasts the world over, will appear in person Friday and Saturday nights as a guest of the International Film Series at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Harris will screen two of his most renowned works, Beaver Trilogy and Rubin & Ed, both starring actor Crispin Glover. The former is a trio of interlocking vignettes — all of them about a young man from a town called Beaver who is obsessed with singer Olivia Newton-John. The parts consist of a documentary, a dramatic piece based on the documentary, and a second dramatic piece, all related in odd and beautiful ways. New York Times critic A.O. Scott called Beaver Trilogy “a rivetingly strange, multilayered inquiry into celebrity, obsession and serendipity.” The comedic Rubin & Ed concerns the surreal adventures of a real-estate scammer and a young man who induces him to help plan the funeral of his beloved cat, now frozen, in scorching Death Valley.
Here’s a rare opportunity to see Harris’s inimitable films and talk to the director about his work. All screenings are in Muenzinger Auditorium on the Boulder campus. Beaver Trilogy screens Friday at 7 and 9:30 p.m.; Rubin & Ed shows Saturday at 8 p.m. only. For more information, call 303-492-1531 or go online to www.internationalfilmseries.com
