Forget the presidential debates and the carnage in Fallujah. If you want to see real bloodletting, fall by the Esquire Saturday night to catch The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. This is the gruesome cult favorite in which five young innocents who have wandered into the wrong part of rural Texas — presumably, not George W.’s ranch in Crawford — run afoul of a madman with a face like a fielder’s mitt and his demented family, who take delight in savaging all comers, roasting their flesh and selling what’s left. Not for the faint of heart, Tobe Hooper’s creepy gorefest is enhanced (if that’s the word) by its nickel-and-dime production values and its glorious disregard for nicety. If anything, the movie’s three sequels were even more violent, but none were as frightening as the original. As if anyone cares, the cast includes Marilyn Burns, Gunnar Hansen and Ed Neal — household names all.
