One of Denver’s burlesque powerhouses is marking an anniversary, but the whole scene will be celebrating at Follies Voudou Burlesque Showcase this evening. “It’s my fourth year in burlesque and my second year hosting a burlesque show,” says organizer Frenchie Renard, who’s been alternating all-burlesque shows with a variety show that includes comedy, magic and who-knows-what-else. “It was such a fly-by-the-seat-of-the-pants kind of thing, and it has grown to be kind of a vital part of the burlesque community in Denver.”
Follies Voudou is one of the few venues at which brand-new burlesque performers can shine their tassels, so to speak, and veterans support the effort. There will be performers from Lannie’s and Ooh La La, plus Cora Vette and Vivienne VaVoom and others who have been involved with the Follies from the get-go. “This is a great way to see all of Denver’s burlesque in one place, at one time,” Renard adds.
That place is the Voodoo Comedy Playhouse, 1260 22nd Street; the festivities begin at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $5; visit voodoocomedy.com or call 303-578-0079 for more information.
