Anthology Fine Art’s Pullin’ for ABC party tonight has a lot going on — screen printing, cheap drinks and music from DJ Squirl, for example — but at its core, it’s about one young generation of artists helping an even younger generation of artists.
“My brother Jacob teaches printmaking at Metro,” says gallery owner Zak Custer, “and basically we wanted to do a show with his students, and we wanted to do something that would go to a nonprofit that we thought would be worthwhile. So the students voted on which one they wanted, and this is the organization they chose.” That organization is Art Builds Communities, a joint venture of the Center for Visual Art and Metro State that provides after-school art instruction to at-risk youth — a particularly valuable service these days, given the increasing cuts in school arts budgets. The show itself features a total of 120 custom screen-printed T-shirts by twelve student designers that the gallery is selling for $10 per, and all proceeds benefit ABC.
“We really made a resolution that we wanted to focus on these non-profit shows,” Custer says, noting that this is the gallery’s third benefit show in its relatively short existence (it opened in August of last year). “You know, when people come through and they’re making a luxury purchase — and art is definitely a luxury purchase — it makes the buyer feel better, it makes us feel better, and it makes the artist feel better to know that the money’s going to a good cause.”
The party runs from 6 to 10 p.m. at Anthology, 635 Santa Fe Drive; there’s no cost to get in, but T-shirt purchases are cash only. For more information, visit www.anthologyfineart.com or call 303-534-1331.
