It’s easy to fall into a Chelsea Peretti-related Internet tunnel. The funny lady has it all: two hilarious shows, All My Exes and Making Friends; a podcast during which she accepts calls from random strangers; and a whip-smart Twitter feed — all of which can suck you in for hours on end. Off the web, Peretti is known as a former writer for the Emmy-nominated Parks and Recreation as well as for her standup, which has garnered her performances at the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival and the HBO Aspen Comedy Festival, among others, along with gigs at clubs all over the country.
Whether she’s talking about her weird family (on whom she blames her awful personality), being too self-absorbed to be a good friend, or how hot girls give bad dating advice, Peretti plays a haughty character who delivers lines full of sarcastic wit and a good deal of silliness. She says it’s mostly an exaggerated role.
“I probably am more positive and kind and together than I am in my standup,” explains Peretti. “In my life, I won’t let myself dwell on negative things over and over, but in standup I will allow myself to explore that, my assumption being that other people will have those feelings as well, and maybe that’s cathartic.”
Peretti will bring her delightfully judgmental jokes to a three-day stint at Comedy Works beginning tonight at 8 p.m. and continuing tomorrow at 8 and 10 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 and 9:45 p.m. Comedy Works is at 1226 15th Street; for tickets, $15 to $23, visit www.comedyworks.com.
