Gallery Sketches: Three New Photography Shows Opening in Denver This Weekend

Get ready to focus on photography: Month of Photography 2015 is developing right now, with its biennial onslaught of spring shows. Here are three MoP exhibitions to get you started.

1) Donna Rae Altieri, 50 Years in Your Face
Ironton Studios & Gallery 
February 27 through April 4
Opening reception: 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, February 27

“Photography has kept my diary for over fifty years, and now I have the privilege of sharing some pages with you,” writes old-school veteran shutterbug Donna Rae Altieri of her retrospective at Ironton, which shows how much a person can do to manipulate imagery without using fancy technology. Altieri’s picture stories start in New York in the ‘60s and move forward into the twenty-first century, all in one big show.

2) Excerpts
Goodwin Fine Art 
February 27 through April 11
Opening reception: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 27

Tina Goodwin at Goodwin Fine Art selected a quintet of photographers — Andrew Beckham, Brenda Biondo, Linda Connor, Binh Danh and David Maisel — who all present ongoing series works in this new show. From Biondo’s refreshingly stark architectural geometrics to Danh’s modern daguerreotype images of Yosemite, each sector of the exhibit is a study in time, place and texture.

3) Strangers I Know
Dateline Gallery
February 28 through March 24
Opening reception: 7 p.m. Saturday, February 28

Dateline enters the MoP fray with Strangers I Know, a group show from the members of Nighted, a Bay Area-based national collective that also publishes rogue zines and quality books of members’ works. Curated by Denver’s Mario Zoots, who also participates in the show, Strangers is a no-holds-barred look at 35mm images from young artists working in California, Washington and Colorado. Spencer Foreman will DJ at Saturday’s opening, and a limited-edition exhibition zine will be available for $10.
