Colorado Avalanche fans look forward to the annual Burgundy & White scrimmage — a charity event benefiting Kroenke Sports Charities and the Colorado Avalanche Youth Hockey programs — as the unofficial beginning of hockey season. After all, it’s their first chance to see the new recruits in action.
It’s “always a pretty intense game,” says Avalanche vice president of communications Jean Martineau. “There’s always some new prospects coming in from the training camp and looking to prove themselves, and it’s a great opportunity for both fans and the team management to judge the talent of those prospects.”
This year, the game moves to Broomfield’s 1stBank Center, which seats just 5,300 for hockey events. So if you’re used to watching the action from the nosebleed seats at the Pepsi Center with 18,000 of your fellow fans, you’ll enjoy this. When the puck drops tonight at 6:30 p.m., watch for Joey Hishon — the Avs’ first-round draft pick coming up from Ontario’s Owen Sound Attack Junior A Hockey Club — and other young guns like Luke Walker, Michael Bournival, Troy Rutkowski, Stephen Silas and Calvin Pickard.
