For Ultimate Fighting Championship fans, the biggest bang of this Independence Day weekend involves a different kind of fireworks: After illnesses and postponements, the long awaited heavyweight match between two really big boys – Denver’s own Shane Carwin and formidable opponent Brock Lesnar – will air tonight on pay-per-view television, putting to rest any doubt over who is the real UFC Heavyweight Champion.

There’s no cover to watch UFC fights at the Oak Tavern, 1416 Market Street, which regularly hosts viewing parties for the league’s Fight Nights, but the charms of watching the action there don’t end there: The Oak is spacious, serves big food and drinks, boasts twelve big HD TV screens and you might even run into a local MMA fighter at the bar.

UFC 116, featuring a full rock ’em sock ’em card topped off by the Carwin-Lesnar match, begins at 9 p.m., but early arrival and reservations are recommended; go to http://oaktaverndenver.com or call 303-888-0655.

Sat., July 3, 9 p.m., 2010
