Justin Halpern has made a living off his memories, of which he has many. Ranging from brutally honest to painfully embarrassing, the deeply funny writer earned a cult following and three-million-strong Twitter army with his wry observations on his grouchy father in Sh*t My Dad Says. Now he’s aiming his insight at even more personal territory: all of the past relationships that died on the way to his current (and happy) marriage.
“I have a lot of stories that seem to lend themselves to universal concepts, and there’s no shortage of embarrassment,” Halpern says. “The easiest part is finding something to laugh at.”
I Suck at Girls follows Halpern from his first kiss to his engagement, and also through several suggestions from his dad. If that sounds made for the screen, it might be: Halpern has already sold the rights to Warner Bros. But his best feedback on this latest project came not from his dad (that would be the greatest backhanded compliment), but from his wife: “The funniest thing she said to me after reading the book was, ‘I’m so glad you got all that stuff out of your system so that when we met you were actually able to make a relationship work.'”
Halpern will share stories and sign books at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street, tonight at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free; for more information, call 303-436-1070 or go to www.tatteredcover.com.
