In the past year, the Denver Handmade Alliance has grown to include more than 100 members, a good indicator that the local DIY modern crafting spirit is alive and well. That means that this year’s DHA-sponsored Art by Craft exhibition, which opens today in the fine and funky 1490 Delgany Event Space, across the street from the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, is also growing. The all-new two-week exhibition contains work by more than forty local crafters in a diverse variety of mediums, from fiber arts to metalsmithing.

“This year, because of the key location, two weeks works perfectly for us, because both the opening and closing coincide with MCA events,” says DHA spokeswoman Becky Wareing. “Our closing will also include a craft market inside the museum.”

Art by Craft debuts with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m., concurrently with a twin reception at the MCA for Isca Greenfield-Sanders and Robert Gober, which makes for an all-around art night out on the block, with the Deluxe food truck, live music by Crows, Vultures, Bulls and an interactive crochet tagging station hosted by the Ladies Fancywork Society. The market, which showcases 32 artists with items for sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 30, also happens in conjunction with the MCA’s Family Free Day. “Because it also happens on the day before Halloween, we’ll definitely be braking out our Halloween flair,” Wareing promises, adding that the festivities will include family activities and crafty swag bags for the first fifty people to come through the door.

See Art by Craft from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, today through October 30; get more information at www.denverhandmade.org.
