Globeville, the bastion of the working class, boasts a weathered history that most of us don’t truly appreciate as we whiz past on I-70. A multicultural crossroads where Denver’s old Eastern European and new Hispanic communities met under a miasma of meatpacking haze and smelter smoke, the neighborhood defines the concept of the melting pot. So it’s no surprise that the Old Globeville Days and 108th Annual Orthodox Food and Cultural Festival follows suit by offering a strong combination of cultural entertainment and food, from tasty burritos to an unbelievable repast of Russian pelmeni, Romanian sarmali, Greek baklava (that’s meat dumplings, cabbage rolls and sheer heaven, in plain English) and other dishes.

Hosted by the Holy Transfiguration of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, 349 East 47th Avenue, in adjacent Argo Park, the two-day fest also includes vendor booths hawking pastry, icons and imported crafts. Join the fun today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. or tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; admission is free. Call 303-294-0938 or go to www.transfigcathedral.org for details.
