The only common thread that ties the performers together at tonight’s Soundscapes+Performance Art+Live Art is that they all fall under the wide category of avant-garde, says facilitator Claudia Woodman. With a bill that includes Victoria Lundy’s ambient theremin playing, healing sounds produced by Of Earth and Sun on instruments handcrafted from bone and shells, and performance art by Calliope of the Future and King Lexie, the evening promises a unique experience that goes beyond the confines of a traditional music show.
“I think music and art can really heal people,” says Woodman. “The avant-garde stuff can either get you out of your own head space — which sometimes is a good thing — or sometimes it can take you to different parts of your head space that you don’t really explore all that often.”
While the performers create soundscapes, which Woodman describes as “sculpting sound like you would sculpt a sculpture,” visual artists Frank Kwiatkowski and Patrick Porter will create live pieces throughout the night. “Every single one of these performers I would be thrilled to go out and go see,” says Woodman. “But to have all of them in the same room at the same time is really exciting.”
