“In a time when women are breaking the glass ceiling, we need to really ascend to true equality,” says Nancy Hart, explaining the impetus for the founding of the Venus Goes Down collective. Recently, the group was looking for a way to embrace the integration of the masculine and the feminine in modern society, and decided to turn to something people have been doing for centuries: art and ritual.
What emerged is Venus Goes Down: A Myth for the New Millennium, a monthlong series of cultural programming that will culminate tonight in an interactive laboratory performance in which the Divine Feminine and Masculine will be united through a modern re-imagining of the ancient Sumerian myth of the descent of Inanna. Incorporating art, music, poetry, dance and ritual, the performance tells the story of “a powerful 21st-century woman who delves into the darkness and emerges reborn to a more integrated world,” Hart says. Live music from Shiva’s Garden and a discussion will accompany the piece.
