Marc Maron’s tenuous tenure in show business has survived several media outlets and questionable eyewear choices. After years of toiling in semi-obscurity, known only to fans of liberal talk radio and comedy nerds, Maron, who appears in Denver for two nights this week, rejuvenated his career by starting the WTF podcast. With its revealing interviews with comedians and endless insight into Maron’s neuroses, the podcast became a massive hit, attracting guests like Jack White and Tom Hanks and regularly ranking among the most downloaded podcasts on iTunes.
The comic also plays a thinly fictionalized version of himself in Maron, a series that is currently airing its second season on IFC. But Maron is a standup first and foremost, having recorded two Comedy Central Presents half-hour shows and releasing his own special, Thinky Pain, last year.
“Comedy Works was thrilled to host Marc Maron last August, and Denver fans who were at those shows had an amazing experience,” says Comedy Works spokeswoman Michele “Mel” Gibson. “Marc Maron is a legend in the standup community.”
Maron will perform tonight and tomorrow, at 7:30 and 9:45 p.m. each night, at the downtown Comedy Works, 1226 15th Street; Friday’s late show is 18+ only. Tickets, $28, are available at comedyworks.com.
