Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that you can always come home to and expect everything to be pretty much the same: the Macy’s parade, the football, the turkey, the stuffing, the pumpkin pie. The faces around the table might change from year to year, but the sentiments do not: We give thanks in our own way, together with friends and family.
In Denver, the Mile High United Way Turkey Trot has been a constant on the same level for more than forty years. The relaxed, four-mile pre-turkey warmup will remix a lot of the same elements today, beginning at 10 a.m. in Washington Park, near the intersection of Louisiana Avenue and Franklin Street.
“Each year we have a handful of really serious runners, but the vast majority of people are families who have done the Turkey Trot for years,” United Way spokesman Robert Thompson told us a few years ago, and that still holds true. Trotters are famous for donning Thanksgiving-themed costumes, so expect to see plenty of turkey wattles and Indian feathers among the crowd — and feel free to suit up yourself!
Entertainment and a beer garden will greet runners and walkers at the finish; registration fees for four waves (two of which allow dogs and strollers) range from $35 to $45 online, or you can take your chances and register on race day on a first come, first served basis.
